Tuscon, Ariz. ? Kansas University sophomore Chris Gilbert is tied for 38th place after the first day of the NCAA regional golf tournament.
Gilbert, who qualified as an individual, shot a 2-over-par 73 Thursday on the Omni Tucson National course. He needs to finish first among individuals not on the top five teams to advance to the NCAAs.
He bogeyed the No. 2, 5, 11 and 12 holes and had birdies on 10 and 16.
“He had a shaky start, but he kept plugging away,” said coach Kit Grove. “He put himself in a position, where if he has two good rounds he might have a fighting chance to advance.”
UC Davis’ Matt Hansen leads after shooting a 64. The 54-hole tournament continues today and Saturday.
