Wichita ? Kansas University’s softball team broke the school single-season home run record in a doubleheader sweep of Wichita State on Wednesday.
The Jayhawks hit five homers in the first game, winning 11-3 in six innings. And KU had a big fifth inning in the nightcap to rally for a 6-3 victory.
With the victories, KU improved to 29-4 in non-conference play and 31-20 overall. Wichita State fell to 16-33.
Junior Liz Kocon and sophomore Mariah Montgomery each homered twice in game one and junior Marissa Ingle added one more as the Jayhawks passed the KU single-season home run record, previously 54 in 2005, now at 59 so far this season.
The Jayhawks trailed 3-1 after four innings of the nightcap, but they scored four runs on three hits with the help of two walks in the fifth inning to take the lead.
Kansas returns to the diamond this weekend to host Texas A&M in the Jayhawks’ final Big 12 contests.
