KU falls to UMass

— Kansas University’s softball team staged a furious rally in the top of the seventh inning, but came up short in a 7-6 loss to No. 25 Massachusetts on Thursday at the San Diego Classic.

Trailing 7-1 entering the seventh, the Jayhawks scored five runs in the inning, but then fell victim to something that plagued them throughout the game — strikeouts.

With the bases loaded and the tying run on third base, KU batters struck out in back-to-back at-bats to end the threat. The Jayhawks struck out 16 times in the contest, with UMass starter Sarah Plourde striking out 15.

Thursday’s loss was the sixth straight one-run game for KU, which fell to 11-14 overall and 0-2 in San Diego.

KU junior Brittany Hile and freshmen Alex Jones and Maggie Hull each had two hits and one RBI in the loss. Senior Sara Ramirez recorded an RBI, while sophomore Kelsey Alsdorf's pinch-hit single in the seventh inning also drove in a run. The base hit improved Alsdorf to 2-for-4 in pinch-hit roles this season.

KU recorded nine hits and six walks, but the Jayhawks also left 12 runners on base.

Kansas will play again at 1:30 p.m. today against Harvard. The Jayhawks also will play San Diego State at 9 tonight.
