Kansas university junior Casey Lytle pulls down a fly ball against Saint Mary. The Jayhawks routed the Spires, 10-0, on Tuesday at Hoglund Ballpark.

There were no plans for a banquet, no champagne in the winning clubhouse.

Instead, Kansas University baseball coach Ritch Price stayed true to his typical demeanor when talking about KU’s 10-0 victory against Saint Mary on Tuesday at Hoglund Ballpark. The victory, No. 250 in Price’s career at Kansas, moved him into second place on the school’s all-time list, one win ahead of Dave Bingham (1988-95) and 188 behind Floyd Temple (1954-81).

“I’m just proud of the job our staff’s done since we came here and the progress we’ve made with our program,” Price said. “I have great respect for Floyd Temple, he’s one of my favorite people in the game. When I get to him, that one will be special for me. When I catch him.”

It didn’t take long for the Jayhawks to catch up with the Spires on Tuesday. While junior outfielder Brian Heere was busy collecting two doubles, a triple and four RBIs in his first three at-bats, freshman pitcher Tanner Poppe tossed five innings of no-hit baseball.

Poppe, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound righthander from Girard, showed considerable improvement over his last start. He overpowered the Saint Mary batters with his fastball and worked fast to get through five innings. After the game, Popper was even faster to get out of the dugout and onto a tutoring session.

“The expectation level (for Poppe) is exactly what took place,” Price said. “That’s what should take place. Obviously he’s got a really special arm, but he needs to mix his breaking ball in next week because, today, he was still throwing fastballs when he was behind, and if you do that in our league you’re going to get really hard.”

Jordan Dreiling (2-for-5, 2 RBIs) and Brandon Macias (2-for-3, 1 RBI) added multi-hit games for the Jayhawks, who improved to 8-3 overall.

Kansas will face Tabor College at 3 p.m. today. Freshman Thomas Taylor is slated to get the start on the mound.
