Kansas University freshman Royce Woolridge sat in the middle of a long table in Anschutz Pavilion, signing autographs for Bill Self’s campers for three hours Sunday while surrounded by his new Jayhawk teammates.

“This is exciting for me. I’m really happy and relieved a little bit that I’m finally here,” said Woolridge, a 6-foot-3 combo guard who averaged 29.2 points and 6.3 rebounds his senior season at Phoenix Sunnyslope High.

“It’s overwhelming a little bit because it’s something new.”

He arrived in Lawrence on Friday.

“My mom and I drove a car from Arizona to here. It took three days,” noted Woolridge. “It was intense, but it was fun. I got to be with my mom. It was cool to be with her. She’s leaving to go back today.”

Woolridge said his goals this summer were “to get bigger and get better, to work on my game. I’ll fit in however coach needs me to fit in. After working out with the team, I’ll see where I fit in.”

Woolridge, who committed to KU before the start of his junior year of high school, graduated on May 27.

“I could have a lot of fun my senior year because I knew where I was going to go to school. It got me ready for this,” Woolridge said. “Senior year was a lot of fun, but now it’s time to go to work and be in college classes.”
