Harstad, Norway ? Kansas University freshman Monica Johannessen competed in the Norwegian Junior Championships Thursday, winning the 100 butterfly and placing second in two other events on the first day.
“Monica has started the Norwegian Junior Championships about as well as she could,” KU coach Clark Campbell said. “Her 100 butterfly was simply an awesome race. She is swimming very well and looking forward to the 50 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay today.”
Johannessen, from Haugesund, Norway, took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.57, the best time by two seconds. She also placed second in two relay events.
In her team’s second-place finish in the 800 free relay, Johannessen had a leadoff split time of 2:02.95. She also had a split time of 26.87 in her team’s second place-finish in the 200-yard medley relay.
