Basketball writers group gives Self national coach of the year award

By Staff     Mar 23, 2009

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association today gave Bill Self its national coach of the year award.

The USBWA, in honoring Self, acknowledged that he “led Kansas to a Big 12 regular season title despite not having one starter return from last year’s national championship team.”

The award for Self marks the second time a Kansas coach has been named national coach of the year by the USBWA. Roy Williams was honored in 1990 by the USBWA.

KU will face Michigan State in the Sweet 16 on Friday in Indianapolis.
