Kansas senior receiver Dexton Fields will miss Saturday’s game against visiting Louisiana Tech due to injury, coach Mark Mangino said Wednesday evening.
“He won’t play this week,” said Mangino, who added that he hopes to have Fields back for the Jayhawks’ Sept. 12 game against South Florida. “I can tell you that there’s no fracture, but he’s in no way ready to play this Saturday, for sure.”
Fields, who was the team leader in receptions in 2007, left Saturday’s victory over Florida International late in the first quarter with what appeared to be a left leg/foot injury. He caught one pass for negative three yards before being helped off the field.
In his place, true freshman Daymond Patterson will likely see increased playing time. In his first collegiate game last week, Patterson caught three passes for 22 yards, in addition to returning a punt for a touchdown.
Meanwhile, starting right offensive tackle Jeremiah Hatch, who sat out last week’s game because of an apparent injury, has spent the week practicing with the team and could play Saturday.
“He’s practiced all week,” Mangino said. “We feel good about what we see. There hasn’t been a whole lot of after-effects from post-practice. Probably. we’ll work him through tomorrow’s practice and if he looks sharp and he’s pain-free, we’ll start him.”
