Lincoln, Neb. ? Kansas University’s softball team rallied for a 6-3 victory over Nebraska after dropping game one, 5-4.
Kansas University’s softball team split a pair of games against Creighton on Wednesday.
The Jayhawks lost the first game, 8-0, but recovered for a 6-3 victory in the second game.
Junior Stevie Crisosto hit two home runs in game two for Kansas (28-9).
Austin, Texas ? Kansas University split a softball doubleheader with Texas on Sunday. The Jayhawks won the first game, 2-0, before dropping Game Two, 3-2.
KU pitcher Kassie Humphreys pitched 102â3 innings on the day.
In Game One, Dougie McCaulley’s two-out second-inning hit to left field scored Humphreys from third base. Humphreys reached base on a lined shot down the right-field line.
Kansas scored one more run in the seventh inning to extend the lead to two. The scoring runner, McCaulley, was singled home from second base by sophomore Stevie Crisosto. The two runs scored by the Jayhawks are the most the team has scored against Texas since a 3-1 victory on May 2, 2004.
Humphreys struck out 11 Longhorns in her complete-game-shutout effort before pitching 32â3 innings to start Game Two.
The Longhorn attack got on track in the fourth inning of the second game, when UT tallied three runs. The key play of the inning came off a Jacqueline Williams single to center field that scored two Texas runners and made the score 3-1. All three runs were unearned.
Kansas’ next game will be Wednesday at Missouri.
Palm Springs, Calif. ? For the second straight day, Kansas University’s softball team won its first game in extra innings, then was no-hit in the second.
KU beat Cal State Fullerton, 3-2, in eight innings during the second day of the Palm Springs Classic, then was no-hit by 12th-ranked Washington, 4-0.
Friday, the Jayhawks (6-7) beat BYU, 2-1, in eight, then were no-hit in a 3-0 loss to Utah.
In the first game, KU’s Jackie Vasquez was placed on second base, following the international tie-breaker rule, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Cyndi Duran. Vasquez scored on a squeeze bunt attempt by Jessica Moppin.
Junior pitcher Serena Settlemier homered in the second inning, her second of the season and 15th of her career.
In the second game, freshman Caitlin Noble (3-3) threw her first career no-hitter.
Las Cruces, N.M. ? Kansas University’s softball team split a pair of games during the first day Friday of the Hilton Classic.
KU beat Arkansas, 5-1, but fell to Purdue, 2-1.
Freshman Cyndi Duran paced the Jayhawks with three hits in the victory, while rookie Christina Ross picked up her first career win.
Ross struck out out three and allowed just three hits.
Nicole Washburn was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and Destiny Frankenstein was 2-for-3 with a run.
In the next game, Purdue (1-0) scored its only runs in the top of the first on a two-run homer.
Jessica Moppin homered in the bottom of the third for KU’s lone run.
KU had three hits and left four on base in the loss.
KU will continue tournament play today against UMKC and host New Mexico State.

Serena Settlemier’s goals were far from greedy.
“I didn’t want a shutout or a no-hitter,” Settlemier said. “I just wanted to finish seven innings and get a win.”
Settlemier, making her first start on the mound for Kansas University’s softball team since 2002, settled for neither.
Settlemier was saddled with the loss as the Jayhawks bowed, 2-1, to Wichita State in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Arrocha Ballpark. KU won the opener, 1-0, behind Kassie Humphreys’ two-hitter.
For four innings, Settlemier was every bit as effective as Humphreys. Then she surrendered three hits and two runs in the fifth inning, and coach Tracy Bunge brought out the hook.
“I was very disappointed,” Settlemier said.
Bunge was more upbeat about Settlemier’s performance. After all, the third-year sophomore from Kelso, Wash., still has a metal plate in her forearm after undergoing surgery that forced her to miss the entire 2003 season.
“She was right around 60 pitches when she came out, but she’s been up to 80, 90 and 100 pitches in practice,” Bunge said. “In hindsight, she may have been losing it. I may have had a quicker trigger, but when you’re not hitting … well, I wanted to see if she could work her way out of it.”
KU’s struggling batters managed only five hits in the twinbill — three by freshman first baseman Nicole Washburn, including a pair of doubles in the nightcap.
In the opener, KU used a hit batsman and two WSU errors in the third inning to manufacture the only run.
“We got a break in the first game,” Bunge said. “It seemed like the first break we’ve had in the last two or three weeks.”
Kansas started quickly in the second game. Destiny Frankenstein walked with two outs in the first, and Washburn doubled her home. However, that was the Jayhawks’ last hit off WSU freshman Margo Pruis until Washburn stroked a one-out double in the seventh, then was stranded when Melanie Wallach fanned and Settlemier grounded out.
Kansas (24-20-1) will return to Big 12 Conference competition today against Missouri. Game time is 5 p.m. at Arrocha Ballpark.
A week ago in Columbia, Mo., Missouri thumped the Jayhawks and senior pitcher Kara Pierce, 7-0. Pierce will be back on the mound today against the Tigers.
“Missouri was a tough place to play, very tough,” Pierce said. “Hopefully, we can make it tough for them here. I know I’m going to have to pick up my intensity and be more careful hitting spots.”
Kansas University’s softball team will journey Wednesday to Wichita State to tune up for this weekend’s home series against Texas Tech.
The Jayhawks and Shockers will play a twinbill at 4 p.m. It will be the second doubleheader in four days for KU, which split a pair of games Sunday at Iowa State.
Jessica Moppin and Sylvia Pfeiffer homered as KU won the opener in Ames, 7-0. However, the Cyclones rebounded to take the second game, 3-1. KU is 1-5 in the Big 12 Conference; 21-9 in all games. ISU is 1-3 in the league and 13-18 overall.
In Sunday’s opener, the Jayhawks scored three runs in the first inning, highlighted by Melaney Torres’ RBI double and Moppin’s two-run home run. In the fifth inning, Nettie Fierros scored on a single by Destiny Frankenstein, giving Kansas a 4-0 lead. KU tacked on three more runs in the sixth, including a solo homer by Pfeiffer.
Junior Kara Pierce (13-7) held the Cyclones to two hits while fanning six in her fifth shutout of the season.
In the second game, ISU scored two runs in the first inning off Kirsten Milhoan. KU plated its only run in the top of the second when Moppin singled, went to third on Ashley Frazer’s double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Fierros.
Kansas will play host to Texas Tech at 2 p.m. Saturday and at 1 p.m. Sunday at Jayhawk Field.
INDEPENDENCE, MO. ? Kansas salvaged a split in softball with UMKC on Wednesday at Adair Park.
UMKC won the first game, 2-1, before the Jayhawks rebounded with a 6-0 decision in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Kangaroos (24-22) rallied with a run in the bottom of the sixth to tie and added an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh for the victory. Katie Wiberg’s single scored pinch-runner Jill Dolan with one out for the game-winner.
KU’s lone run came in the first inning when Shelly Musser led off with a homer. KU (29-18) managed just two hits in the first game. Serena Settlemier was the losing pitcher, falling to 9-7.
In the second game, KU center fielder Christi Musser went 2-for-3 with a double, home run, three runs and two RBIs. Leah Tabb also homered for KU.
Kirsten Milhoan (6-3) was the winning pitcher.

It was a pretty home opener for Kansas University’s softball team Saturday at Jayhawk Field, but it turned ugly pretty fast.
The Jayhawks defeated Western Michigan, 8-0, in their first game in the Holiday Inn Invitational, but yielded three early runs to Tulsa in a 4-3 defeat.
“I think ‘pleased’ is a good word to say about the first game,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said. “A lot of people put the ball in play and we made some things happen on the bases. When we get our speed people on we can do a lot of things and I think the first game was evidence of that.”
Kansas scored three runs in both the first and second innings against Western Michigan. Courtney Wright hit a two-run single in the first inning and Megan Urquhart drove in two Jayhawks in the second.
KU scored two more runs in the third inning and Kara Pierce continued to shut out the Broncos to end the game after five innings. Pierce struck out four and allowed just three hits.
“I thought Kara Pierce threw a nice ball game for us,” Bunge said. “I don’t think she was as sharp as I’ve seen her this year, but she moves the ball around and is real deceiving.”
Along with the second-inning single, Urquhart also had an RBI triple in the first inning and finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs.
While the first game pleased Bunge, the second did anything but.
“I’m extremely disappointed in our effort,” she said of the loss to Tulsa, which entered the game with a 4-17 record. “I don’t think we played poorly or anything like that, but those are the kinds of games against the kind of people that good teams win.”
The first three Tulsa batters reached base and Tulsa scored three runs in the first inning.
Kansas scored two runs in the second inning to close within one. Katie Campbell opened the inning with a home run and two batters later Shelly Musser knocked another pitch over the fence.
Tulsa scored an insurance run in the sixth inning on a single by Kari Curtis.
Kansas will face Loyola-Chicago at 11:15 a.m. today and will then play in either the consolation game at 1:30 p.m. or the championship game at 3:45 p.m.
Kansas University’s softball team blanked Johnson County CC, 5-0, but fell to Washburn, 2-1, in the final game of the Jayhawk Invitational Sunday at Jayhawk Field.
Kara Pierce hurled a 4-hitter versus JCCC. KU will continue its fall exhibition season on Oct. 14 against Butler County CC and Wichita State.
