KU softball on road – again

? Kansas University’s road-weary softball team will conclude its monthlong travels this weekend at the Southern Illinois Invitational.

The Jayhawks, off to a 12-4 start, will meet No. 5-ranked Northwestern and host SIU in games this afternoon. Then KU will wrap up the two-day tourney on Sunday with games against Western Illinois and Bradley.

Kansas has outscored its foes, 64-35, and has three players with .300-plus batting averages. Outfielder Dougie McCaulley is hitting .354, third baseman Val Chapple .327 and first baseman Amanda Jobe .304.

Jobe, a sophomore out of Shawnee Mission Northwest, also has three home runs, 10 RBIs and a .522 slugging percentage.

In the pitcher’s circle, Valerie George has posted a 5-1 record with a team-best 0.83 earned-run average, freshman Allie Clark is 3-1 with a 1.36 ERA, and Sarah Vertelka is 4-2 with a 1.60 ERA.
