Kansas University student-athletes earned a combined 3.03 grade-point average during the 2008 spring semester, setting a KU athletic-department record.
Eleven of KU’s varsity teams compiled GPA’s of 3.0 or higher, led by volleyball, whose 3.45 GPA edged women’s golf (3.43) for the highest average in the department. Soccer’s 3.30 set a record for that sport at KU, and women’s basketball’s second consecutive 3.11 tied the all-time record for that sport at KU.
A department-record 58 student-athletes achieved perfect 4.0 GPA’s, heading a group of 282 student-athletes (58 percent of KU’s active rosters) named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll (GPA’s of 3.0 or higher).
“We are tremendously pleased and proud of the effort these young men and women have invested in their academic responsibilities,” KU athletic director Lew Perkins said.
“It’s easy to take for granted the discipline and commitment it takes to excel both in athletic competition and in the classroom. We extend our congratulations to the student-athletes, our terrific KU faculty and to our outstanding athletics academic support staff.”
