Preseason honors roll in for KU football team

Kansas University kickoff return man Marcus Herford was named a first-team preseason All-America selection by Phil Steele magazine, it was announced Monday.

Herford, a rising senior, ranked second in the Big 12 and 15th in the NCAA with an average of 28.6 yards per return. He averaged 26.1 yards a return in 2006.

The magazine also selected middle linebacker Joe Mortensen, who is coming off of knee surgery, and outside linebacker Mike Rivera, both seniors, as first-team All-Big 12 players.

Running back Jake Sharp was named to the third team and receiver Dezmon Briscoe, guard Chet Hartley, linebacker James Holt and punt returner Raimond Pendleton were listed as honorable mention Big 12 players.

KU started voluntary summer workouts Monday morning. The players will report to training camp Aug. 1, and the season will open Aug. 30 at home against Florida International.
