? A party atmosphere filled Forbes Field in Topeka as about 100 people — young and old — stood awaiting the return of Kansas University’s victorious football team.

Those KU fans ignited when the Orange Bowl champs walked through the terminal and out to the bus that headed back to Lawrence.

Players stopped to sign many autographs and slap fans with high fives.

Kansas (12-1) defeated Virginia Tech (11-3) 24-21 in Thursday night’s game.

It was a historic season for the Kansas football team. KU had never won 12 games in a football season and had never won a BSC bowl game.

David Gomez, who came out to see the victors return, said the entire season was exciting.

“Coming up with 12 wins, seeing the stadium packed for games, that’s an exciting time,” he said.

Some of the fans in attendance recently returned from Miami themselves.

One fan, who only wanted to be identified as Blue, called in sick from work to attend the return of the Jayhawks. He said the best medicine for him was Jayhawk spirit.

Colby Sullivan says he is is proud to be an alumni of a school with a reputable football and basketball program.

“We’re a super power — a complete program,” Sullivan said. “It makes you really proud.”

The Jayhawks now are on their way to Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence.
