KU receiver Briscoe earns honorable mention

Kansas University sophomore receiver Dezmon Briscoe was named an honorable mention all-American selection by SI.com (Sports Illustrated), the school announced Wednesday.

Briscoe caught 78 passes for 1,206 yards and 12 touchdowns in his second season as a starter, also earning second-team all-Big 12 honors.

Three KU players, meanwhile, were tabbed as freshman all-Americans by various publications. Offensive tackle Jeff Spikes and defensive tackle Richard Johnson, Jr., each earned third-team honors from Phil Steele Magazine, while offensive tackle Jeremiah Hatch was named a rivals.com second-team selection.

Hatch started 11 games for the Jayhawks this season, including the final eight at left tackle. Spikes played at the opposite tackle position, starting 12 games total, and Johnson was an eight-game starter and finished the year with 13 tackles.

Tyler CB Rubles signs with Kansas

Tyler Community College cornerback Calvin Rubles, who orally committed to KU last week, on Wednesday signed his national letter of intent, Rivals.com reported. It was the first day December graduates could sign letters of intent.

“The coach from UAB still kept trying to get me to go to their school even after I committed,” Rubles told Rivals.com. “It didn’t matter though because I was pretty solid to Kansas.”
