Kansas City, Kan. ? Kansas University and Kansas State each won two of four races, but the Wildcats claimed the First Varsity Eight Race to claim a 13-8 overall victory in the Kansas Cup rowing dual Saturday at Wyandotte County Lake.
Four Jayhawks – Alia Bober, Kara Boston, Hailee Jones and Elisheva Patterson – were recognized on Senior Day.
Snow flurries and sleet fell throughout the morning.
KU won both novice races. The Novice Four boat earned a 28-second victory over K-State.
KU’s Novice Eight boat also maneuvered through the chilly waters in a blazing 7:12.8 to finish 17 seconds ahead of the Wildcats. The Novice Eight race was contested from a floating start because of large gusts of wind at the start line.
Kansas State rallied from the 8-0 deficit to take both varsity races. K-State finished four seconds ahead of Kansas’ Second Novice Eight boat. The Wildcats’ First Varsity Eight boat completed the course in 7:16.0, 6.7 seconds faster than KU’s top boat. It is Kansas State’s third Kansas Cup victory in the past four years.
