The Jayhawks Lounge

By Todd Chapple     Apr 2, 2008

Mine is my basement called the Jayhawk Lounge. It started when my wife and I lived in Wichita in 1997. Now we live in Lawrence, and it has followed us ever since. When we moved to our new house almost 3 years ago, the basement wasn’t finished, and we had Bob Santee, son of famous KU runner Wes Santee, finish it like a sports bar. Four TVs (one big screen, one plasma, one reg, one in the bathroom so you don’t miss anything!), full bar, KU memorabilia all over. We have people over to watch the games, who bring food, drinks, etc. All of us are superstitious. One guy even has his own seat that no one else can sit in. Before the game starts, we’ll play the U2 song that is also played at Allen Fieldhouse during pregame intros, and after each victory, we have a victory song that was picked by one of the attendees last year right after the UCLA loss, “We won’t get fooled again” by The Who. Because it’s a “Lounge” people store slippers on the back of a door in the basement with their names on the shoe rack. Most everyone’s slippers have Jayhawks or a KU logo on them.
