David Kamrar, author of “The Jayhawk: Fact or Myth – A Story for All Ages,” will sign copies of his book from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Oread Books in the Kansas Union.
“The Jayhawk: Fact or Myth – A Story for All Ages” is a fanciful retelling of the origin of Kansas University’s mascot, the Jayhawk. A powerful thunderstorm over Mount Oread draws strength from the rocky outcroppings, piercing a summer night with mysterious energy. By morning, a new creature hatches – possessing the strongest characteristics of both blue jays and sparrow hawks.
Based on a vivid dream, Kamrar’s story of the Jayhawk’s emergence was written in the middle of the night and finished by the next morning. Unable to secure an artist for the illustrations, at the urging of friends and family he borrowed his daughter’s colored pencils and drew the illustrations himself.
Kamrar attended KU on a track scholarship and graduated in 1967. He now lives in Modesto, Calif. A portion of profits from the sale of “The Jayhawk: Fact or Myth” will be donated to KU’s track program.
