Ames, Iowa ? Jared Josten scored 20 points, 18 of which came in the second half, and Northern Iowa beat in-state rival Iowa State, 61-48, Tuesday to snap a four-game road losing streak against the Cyclones. Eric Coleman added 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Panthers (5-1), who outscored Iowa State 30-10 down the stretch and picked up their first win at Hilton Coliseum since 1997.
The Panthers, who often get overlooked in Iowa despite three straight NCAA Tournament appearances from 2004-06, snapped a 21-game road losing streak against the Hawkeyes last season. Northern Iowa can now include Iowa State to its list of impressive road victories.
It was just the program’s third victory in Ames in 27 tries.
“Anytime we’re able to win an in-state game, whether it’s home or away, it’s important for our program,” said coach Ben Jacobson, who was the top assistant under Iowa State coach Greg McDermott at Northern Iowa. He now is 2-0 against the Cyclones.
