Kansas State forward Bill Walker (12) puts a shot up over Western Illinois forward James Granstra during the first half of the Wildcats' 77-64 victory Saturday in Manhattan.

? Freshman Michael Beasley scored 23 of his 28 points in the second half and had 22 rebounds, helping Kansas State overcome a sloppy first half on the way to a 77-64 victory over Western Illinois.

Western Illinois (1-2), a team that has won only four of its 54 road games in four-plus years under coach Derek Thomas, capitalized on K-State’s sloppy ball handling and defensive breakdowns to pull to 28-27 on David Dubois’ breakaway layup late in the first half.

Beasley hit a couple of shots in the final minutes of the half, including a 3-pointer, and grabbed 10 rebounds, giving KSU (3-0) a 31-27 halftime lead. He kept it going after the break, scoring 15 points in the first 91â2 minutes of the second half.

No. 15 Texas A&M 85, Ouachita 59

College Station, Texas – Bryan Davis scored 15 points, and freshman DeAndre Jordan had 12 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double to lead Texas A&M.

Jordan also broke the Big 12 record for consecutive field goals made. He has made 16 straight field goals over the last four games to break the previous record of 13, set by Nebraska’s Mikki Moore in three games in 1998.

The Aggies led this one from the beginning and Jordan’s six quick points to open the second half put the game further out of reach.

Ouachita was led by Daniel Maddox with 21 points.

Nebraska 59, Alabama A&M 45

Lincoln, Neb. – Aleks Maric had 21 points, 16 rebounds, four blocked shots and four steals as Nebraska used a smothering defense to shut down Alabama A&M.

Nebraska (2-0) stifled the Bulldogs with an attacking defense that grabbed 14 steals and held A&M to just 28 percent shooting.

Alabama A&M (1-3) made just six shots in the first half, including three in the first four minutes of the game.

Four of the baskets were 3-pointers.

The Huskers used a 19-3 run to go up 22-10 on Cookie Miller’s steal and layup midway through the first half.

A&M got just two 3-pointers in the first six minutes of the second half while Nebraska expanded its lead.

The Huskers used a 13-3 spurt to go up 47-26 on Steve Harley’s eight-foot jumper with 14 minutes left.

The Huskers hit a scoring drought and went nearly six minutes between baskets, but the Bulldogs could only cut the lead to 10 after an 8-0 run.

Maric responded with a hoop with 2:20 left and hit two free throws in the final minute.

Ryan Anderson had 10 points for Nebraska. Hilton Evans led A&M with 16.

Wisconsin 78, Colorado 52

Madison, Wis. – Wisconsin began this season on a search for scoring and seems to have found at least part of the answer in sophomore guard Trevon Hughes.

Hughes scored 18 in Wisconsin’s defeat of Colorado and has led the Badgers in scoring in three of their first four games.

Hughes scored a total of 54 points in three games for Wisconsin (4-0) in the three-day America’s Youth Classic tournament and was named to the all-tournament team along with Butch and Landry.

On the other side, Richard Roby scored 20 to lead Colorado (2-2).

Texas Tech 60, Stephen F. Austin 44

Lubbock, Texas – Martin Zeno scored 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Alan Voskuil hit five 3-pointers in adding 17 to lead Texas Tech past Stephen F. Austin.

Zeno scored 14 of Tech’s first 19 points in the second half following a sluggish start for both schools, which shot a combined 34 percent from the floor before the first half ended with Tech up 27-18.

But Texas Tech (2-1) hit 54 percent of its shots in the final 20 minutes, getting 22 of its 33 points from Zeno and Voskuil, who was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Matt Kingsley scored 19 points to lead SFA (2-1), which had 23 turnovers.

The win came a day after sophomore Decensae White, who started in Tech’s 56-54 loss to Sam Houston State on Wednesday night, left the team.
