Sacramento, Calif. ? Sophomore right-hander Val George tossed a one-hitter as the Kansas University softball team beat Idaho State, 3-1, to earn a split Friday in the opening day of play at the Capital Classic.
George (5-2) struck out 10, surrendering a lone single in the top of the second inning that plated the Bengals’ only run.
Meanwhile, KU shortstop Stevie Cristoso blasted a solo home run in the fourth inning to knot the score, and the Jayhawks used an RBI single by pinch-hitter Kassie Humphreys and a sacrifice fly by Cristoso in the sixth to salt the game away.
The Jayhawks fell to Cal Poly, 7-3, in their first game. Humphreys hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning to open the scoring, but suffered the loss in the circle after allowing the Mustangs to score seven unanswered runs. She gave up seven hits and walked two as her record slipped to 10-3.
KU (18-8-1) had 11 hits in the game, with Dougie McCaulley, Nicole Washburn, Amanda Jobe and Crisosto each collecting a pair.
The Jayhawks will return to action today with another doubleheader, meeting Georgia Southern at 2:30 p.m., followed by a 5 p.m. contest against Pittsburgh.
