Big 12 opener unkind

? A four-run seventh inning ended any comeback hopes for the Kansas University baseball team Friday night, as the Jayhawks suffered a 9-3 loss to No. 8 Texas A&M in the Big 12 Conference opener for both teams.

While KU (12-10 overall, 0-1 Big 12) repeatedly threatened against Aggies starter David Newmann, the bats went silent once Texas A&M (19-2, 1-0) turned to reliever Kyle Nicholson. He allowed just one hit in five scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory.

Nick Czyz suffered the loss for the Jayhawks, allowing five runs – all earned – in six innings.

He matched his career high with nine strikeouts.

Kyle Murphy collected two hits for KU, while Ryne Price had an RBI triple.

The two teams will return to action at 6:30 p.m. today in the second game of the three-game series.
