Tovar officially joins KU coaching staff

By J-W Staff Reports     Mar 8, 2007

As expected, Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino announced Wednesday that Steve Tovar had joined his staff as linebackers coach.

Tovar, 36, coached linebackers at Army for two seasons and last year was a defensive assistant for the Miami Dolphins. He was an All-American while playing at Ohio State and played in the NFL for eight years.

“Steve coaches with the same drive and intensity he displayed as a player,” Mangino said. “He’s very bright and will be an excellent teacher of schemes and fundamentals. We are very pleased to have him join our staff.”

Tovar replaces Mike Mallory, who left Kansas after just one season to join Steve Kragthrope’s staff at Louisville. His hiring mean KU will have three new coaches on its 2007 staff – offensive coordinator Ed Warinner, cornerbacks coach Je’Ney Jackson and Tovar.
