Simien working out, eyes summer return

? Wayne Simien, still on his way back from a recurrence of a salmonella infection, is working out with the Miami Heat again, and the team is “taking a cautious approach” and is hopeful he can return to action by this summer, according to team spokesman Tim Donovan.

Simien, a Kansas University product, suffered the infection during the summer, recovered sufficiently to start the season on the roster, appeared in five games, and was de-activated in order to fight the infection.

He was cleared last week by team doctors to resume working out with the team, but still isn’t participating in full workouts, according to Donovan.

Simien, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound native of Leavenworth who turns 24 on Friday, appeared in 43 games as a rookie for the Heat last season. He averaged 9.7 minutes, 3.4 points and 2.1 rebounds.
