KU leaves for Big 12 tournament

The Kansas Jayhawks are on their way to the Big 12 tournament.

The team bus left from Allen Fieldhouse about 1:30 for Topeka’s Forbes Field. At Forbes, the team will board a plane for their flight to Oklahoma City and a first-round match-up with the Oklahoma Sooners. Kansas squeaked by the Sooners in Norman, Okla., when they met earlier this season.

A crowd of about six, five people and a dog, cheered the players as they boarded their bus.

Loretta Gantenbein, “born and raised in Lawrence,” was there with her sister to wish the team good bye, just like she’s done before almost every road game dating back at least to the 1988 National Championship season. Gantenbein says it takes a lot for her to miss “her boys” coming and going.

“I’ve been here at 2 in the morning, 4 in the morning. If we know they’re coming, we’ll be up here,” she said.

Also in attendance were Dana, Charlie and Helen Aydukovich, plus their dog Cassie. The Aydukoviches also send the team off almost every time, even going so far as to have Dana and Charlies grown daughter waiting in Topeka to cheer the team as they get on the plane.

Kansas University’s first game in the Big 12 tournament is set for 11:30 a.m. Friday.
