Ex-Jayhawk Burnett resigns

Cheryl Burnett, unable to repeat her previous success, is no longer the women’s basketball coach at Michigan University.

Burnett, a 1980 Kansas University graduate, announced her retirement Tuesday even though she had a year left on a five-year contract. Burnett never managed a winning season at Michigan. She was 35-83 overall and 10-54 in Big 10 Conference games.

“Cheryl was very professional through all of this,” Martin said. “We wish Cheryl and her staff all the best in their future endeavors.”

Burnett came to Michigan after 15 highly successful seasons at Southwest Missouri State. She twice took that program to the Final Four and compiled a 319-136 record. She resigned suddenly following the 2001-02 season and was out of coaching for a year before taking the Wolverines’ post.

A native of Centralia, Mo., Burnett was a Kansas University guard under coach Marian Washington.
