? Nicky Wieben scored 18 points as Iowa State used a string of

second-half three-pointers to hold off upset-minded Kansas State, 57-45, on Tuesday in the first round of the Big 12 Conference tournament.

Fifth-seeded Iowa State won its sixth straight game and advanced to a quarterfinal matchup today against fourth-seeded Nebraska. Kansas State has lost its last six games and failed to reach the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season after making four straight trips from 2002 through 2005.

Kansas State won the Women’s National Invitation Tournament last season and with a Rating Percentage Index of 69 entering the week, the Wildcats theoretically still could receive another NIT bid.

Iowa State – likely bound for the NCAA tournament no matter how it fares in the league event – never trailed, but was tied with the 12th-seeded Wildcats, losers of 12 of their last 14 games, on four occasions in the second half, the last at 33-33 with 10:27 left.

Texas 70, Missouri 57

Oklahoma City – Texas women’s coach Jody Conradt picked up her 900th career win as the Longhorns routed Missouri.

Conradt is 900-306 in 38 seasons – four at Sam Houston State, three at Texas-Arlington and 31 at Texas. Among NCAA Division I coaches – male or female – she trails only Pat Summitt of Tennessee, who has 941 wins entering the NCAA Tournament.

Colorado 71, Texas Tech 67

Oklahoma City – Jackie McFarland scored a season-high 32 points and assisted on the decisive basket for the Buffs.

Whitney Houston scored the tiebreaking bucket for Colorado.
