Russell Robinson is savoring every second of his fourth Bill Self summer basketball camp.
“I walked in (the gym) just now. It’s kind of scary because this is probably my last time doing it,” Robinson, Kansas University’s senior point guard from New York, said of being a counselor.
“I’ve done it three, four years already. It’s been a lot of fun. I’m just happy to be part of it.”
The 6-foot-1 Robinson, who is on track to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies next spring, is enrolled in summer school for the fourth straight year while also working Self’s and other coaches’ camps.
“My mom will be proud,” Robinson said of the day he walks down Campanile Hill. “The main thing for me is to graduate from school, be a positive role model for kids, help my team any way I can.”
Robinson is coming off a productive season in which he averaged 7.2 points with a team-leading 161 assists against 67 turnovers.
“I’ve come to accept this is my last time around. I’m going to try to make the best of it,” Robinson said. “I’m going to take my experience and be a vocal leader. I’m working on that real hard. I can point to the fact I’m a senior. I can use that to lead, (but) I will not abuse my authority.
He’s working hard on his game.
“I’m staying in condition, getting some jump shots up, keeping basketball on my mind even though you need a little break from the season,” Robinson said. “It’s important to stay in the gym.”
The second of Self’s two weekly camp sessions started Sunday afternoon and will run through Thursday morning.
