Big 12 Commissioner Kevin Weiberg to step down

By J-W Staff Reports     Jun 14, 2007

Kevin Weiberg, just the second commissioner in the history of the Big 12 conference, announced Thursday that he will be stepping down from his post effective July 15, 2007.

Weiberg will be taking over as the Vice President of University Planning and Development with the Big Ten Network.

“There is never a perfect time to depart a position like this,” commented Weiberg, “but I believe the timing is good in that the Conference has completed its major short-term business agenda with television agreements contracted into the next decade, championship sites secured for the next four years and bowl agreements in place through the 2009 season. I am excited about the opportunity to be associated with this new television venture and to reconnect with the Big Ten universities where I previously served. But I am also sad to be departing from the Big 12 and so many good friends and colleagues.

“I am proud of the growth and progress of the Big 12 over the last nine years. By working together our members have excelled competitively, significantly grown revenues, and established a strong national presence and leadership position among the major conferences.”

Weiberg began his work as the Big 12 Commissioner in December of 1998, and during his tenure, the conference has nearly doubled annual revenue distribution to member institutions. For the 2006-07 fiscal year, the Big 12 distributed a record $106 million, compared to $54 million in its first season.
