Here’s a crazy statistic that figures to garner much attention nationally between now and Saturday night:
Kansas University’s men’s basketball team, which entertains Texas A&M in an 8 p.m. tipoff at Allen Fieldhouse, owns a 31-0 record against teams from the Big 12’s South Division on the Jayhawks’ home floor.
That’s right. No South team, since the inception of the league in 1996-97, has won in KU’s tradition-rich building.
“I didn’t know we had a home winning streak against South teams,” said KU coach Bill Self, who often likes to discuss the “law of averages” in sports.
“The thing is, we usually play pretty well at home. Going back a long time, Kansas has been fairly successful at home. We’ve got pretty good players, and there is a great home crowd. I just think Kansas has had pretty good teams, and good teams are hard to beat at home.”
KU has not exactly been a slouch against North Division squads. The Jayhawks are 46-6 at home against Iowa State, Kansas State, Nebraska, Missouri and Colorado.
Iowa State has beaten KU three times in Allen since the start of the new league, Missouri once, Kansas State once and Nebraska once. Colorado is winless.
The South consists of Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
“I do think there is a little advantage for the North (at Allen) because they go there every year,” said Texas coach Rick Barnes. The Longhorns are 0-5 at KU in Big 12 action, coming close in a 90-87 loss in 2003.
