Kent Shelley, the longtime head baseball coach at Johnson County Community College and a former player at Kansas University, has been named part of the 2007 Hall of Fame class by the NJCAA Baseball Coaches Association.
The induction ceremony will take place in May at the NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series banquet in Grand Junction, Colo. Joining Shelley in this year’s class are fellow coaches Jerald Blemker of Vincennes University and Dave Grant of Glendale Community College.
In 1987, Shelley became just the second head coach at Johnson County, replacing Snny Maynard. In 19 seasons, Shelley has compiled a record of 525-355-1. His teams have won two NJCAA Region VI titles and have recorded nine 30-win seasons.
As a player, Shelley first suited up for Pratt Community College before ending his career at KU, where he was elected co-captain for the 1982 squad. After completing his eligibility, he served as a graduate assistant coach for the Jayhawks.
In addition to his coaching duties at JCCC, Shelley serves as a professor in the physical education department. He is also an associate scout for the Kansas City Royals.
