Ames, Iowa ? The Kansas University track and field teams crowned two individual champions Saturday on the final day of the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
Freshman Jordan Scott won the men’s pole vault, clearing 17 feet, 51â2 inches and earning an NCAA provisional mark in the process.
Teammate Colby Wissel used a strong kick over the final 300 meters to win the 3,000-meter run with a time of 8 minutes, 6.72 seconds.
The KU men’s team finished seventh in the final standings with 57 team points.
The KU women – who watched pole vaulter Kate Sultanova claim her individual crown Friday – finished sixth in the team standings with 52 points.
Both teams will return to Ames next weekend for the Iowa State Invitational, their final chance to qualify for the NCAA Indoor National Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on Mar. 9-10.
KU tennis team falls
Stillwater, Okla. – The Kansas University women’s tennis team dropped the first of three straight road duals Saturday, falling 6-1 to Oklahoma State in a Big 12 Conference matchup.
KU’s lone point came courtesy of sophomore Yuliana Svistun’s victory at No. 5 singles, where she rallied to knock off OSU’s Marta Tsivka, 3-6, 7-5 1-0 (5). It was Svistun’s fifth straight win.
The Jayhawks’ top doubles team of Elizaveta Avdeeva and Edina Horvath earned an 8-3 victory against OSU’s Iryna Tkachenko and Lauren Simmons, but the Cowgirls (4-0 overall, 1-0 Big 12) won the additional two doubles matches to win the team doubles point.
KU (2-8, 0-2) will return to action next Saturday at Iowa.
