Ames, Iowa ? Kansas University juniors Kate Sultanova and Egor Agafonov won the women’s pole vault and the men’s weight throw, respectively, at day one of the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
The KU men tied for third with 18 points and the women fourth with 23 after one day.
Sultanova cleared a Big 12-record tying 13-91â4 feet in the pole vault. She has qualified for the NCAA Indoor set for March 9 in Fayetteville, Ark.
“I kept believing in myself and was able to win,” Sultanova said.
Agafonov successfully defended his weight-throw crown in a career-best-tying toss of 76-1, the longest throw in the country this year.
He also will be attending the NCAA Indoor where he will look to improve on his second-place performance from last year.
“It was a very rewarding performance because I feel like all the work my coach and I do is paying off,” Agafonov said. “I really enjoy the guys I compete with and I just want to keep moving up and throwing farther.”
