Big first inning lifts Stanford over KU

? Stanford scored five runs in the first inning en route to a 6-5 victory over Kansas University in college baseball on Friday at Sunken Diamond.

Erik Morrison collected three hits, while Preston Land hit a two-run homer for 7-2 KU. Stanford improved to 5-5.

Stanford’s Ryan Seawell hit a solo home run and Jeff Whitlow a three-run blast in the first. Whitlow’s shot was off the scoreboard in leftcenterfield.

KU scored in the second on Buck Afenir’s RBI single that scored Land from second base. John Allman, Ryne Price and Morrison delivered three straight singles in the third to pull within 5-2. KU also scored a run in the sixth off two hits batsmen and an error.

Land slugged a two-run homer in the eighth to cut the deficit to 6-5.

The Jayhawks and Cardinal will continue their series today with a 3 p.m. game.
