Austin, Texas ? Shaquina Mosley made a layup with 0.4 seconds left to give the Kansas University women’s basketball team a 50-49 victory over Texas on Saturday night, the Jayhawks’ second straight Big 12 Conference victory after an 0-9 start in conference play.
Mosley had her jumper blocked by Ashley Lindsey and time ran out on the clock. But the referees added 0.4 seconds, and Mosley sneaked underneath the basket for the game winner.
Mosley finished with seven points and five assists.
Tiffany Jackson led the Longhorns with 14 points.
Brittainey Raven scored five of her 11 points during an 8-0 Texas run with under four minutes left to give the Longhorns a 47-45 lead. But Kelly Kohn, who led all scorers with 17, nailed a three-pointer at the two-minute mark to put the Jayhawks up by one.
Lindsey responded with a layup with 1:01 left to put Texas (16-9 overall, 5-6 Big 12 Conference) back on top.
Texas’ loss kept coach Jody Conradt two wins shy of her 900th career victory. She is 898-302 all time.
Jackson scored six of her 10 first half points during Texas’ 10-2 run to end the half. Kansas (8-16, 2-9) shot just 29 percent for the half and made only one basket in the final 5:24 to go into its locker room down, 29-22.
The Jayhawks came out with a 7-0 run to start the second and picked up their defensive intensity as well. Jackson ended the run with a layup after four minutes, but that was the only basket Texas would make through the first 11:20 of the half.
In addition to Kohn, fellow KU freshman Danielle McCray enjoyed a productive afternoon against the Longhorns, scoring 15 points and pulling down a game-high 10 rebounds.
KU will try to make it three victories in a row when it returns to action at 7 p.m. Wednesday against rival Missouri in a Valentine’s Day Border Showdown at Allen Fieldhouse. It will be the first of three straight home games for the Jayhawks.
