San Diego ? Kansas University’s softball team survived a late rally in its season opener Thursday, beating Cal-Santa Barbara, 3-2, in the Campbell-Cartier Classic.
Freshman Sara Ramirez hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, and Dougie McCaulley and Amanda Jobe had RBIs in the seventh inning to give the Jayhawks enough runs for the victory.
McCaulley went 2-for-4, while Stevie Crisosto doubled and scored a seventh-inning run.
KU’s Kassie Humphreys pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters and walking just one in seven innings of work.
Kansas (1-0) continues play in the tournament today with a game against No. 10 California. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
