Kansas University’s football team practiced on a sweltering afternoon at the practice fields adjacent to Hoglund Ballpark, with about 100 die-hards beating the heat to watch.
Among the noticeable developments from the workout:
* Sophomore quarterback Todd Reesing worked exclusively at first team on Monday, and KU coach Mark Mangino hinted that Reesing is about to be named the starter for the Sept. 1 game against Central Michigan.
“I dont want to use any terms,” Mangino said when asked if Reesing is the frontrunner, “but I would say that probably we’re pretty close to making a decision on the quarterback situation. It’s not far off.”
Mangino declined to comment on if Kerry Meier was dinged up with a minor injury, though he did say, “I don’t think it has a bearing on the competition.”
* A couple of true freshmen were working with the first team Monday, too – cornerback Chris Harris and wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe. Mangino confirmed that both are in the running for a starting spot.
* Rameses Arceo apparently is making the starting spot at right guard a difficult competition. He was working on first team Monday while Chet Hartley was on second team.
