Buffs put scare in Bulldogs

? Freshman Joe Cox may have won more than a game with his fourth-quarter performance Saturday.

Cox rescued No. 9 Georgia, throwing two touchdown passes in the last 9:11 – the second a 20-yarder with 46 seconds left – and the Bulldogs came back to beat winless Colorado, 14-13.

With Georgia now heading into its Southeastern Conference schedule next week at Mississippi, Cox may have earned his first start.

“It’s hard to say exactly what to do for sure,” said Georgia coach Mark Richt, who already has tried Joe Tereshinski and another freshman, Matthew Stafford, as starting quarterbacks.

Now, the quarterback competition is open again.

“We’ll have to step back and look at the big picture again, but Joe Cox threw his hat in there real strong,” Richt said.

Cox, who took over late in the third quarter for an ineffective Stafford, threw a 23-yard TD pass to fullback Brannan Southerland for Georgia’s first touchdown. Cox capped the comeback with his 20-yarder to tight end Martrez Milner.

Colorado, 0-4 under new coach Dan Hawkins, built a 13-0 lead behind quarterback Bernard Jackson, who passed for 140 yards and ran for 85 yards and a touchdown. But Cox brought the Bulldogs (4-0) back from the brink of what would have been a shocking loss.

No. 17 Oklahoma 59, Middle Tennessee 0

Norman, Okla. – Adrian Peterson scored three touchdowns, Malcolm Kelly set a school record for receiving in a brilliant first quarter, and the Sooners (3-1) scored 45 points in the first half on their way to the rout.

Paul Thompson threw for 257 yards and three touchdowns as Oklahoma left nothing to chance after a 34-33 loss last week to Oregon that the Pac-10 Conference later said was affected by an incorrect call.

No. 23 Nebraska 56, Troy 0

Lincoln, Neb. – Marlon Lucky ran for 156 yards and three long touchdowns, and Kenny Wilson ran for 106 yards and two scores for the Cornhuskers (3-1).

Held to 211 yards last week in a loss to USC, Nebraska blew past that total early in the second quarter on its way to a season-high 597.

Missouri 31, Ohio 6

Columbia, Mo. – Chase Daniel threw two touchdown passes to Will Franklin and ran for another score to lead the Tigers (4-0).

Missouri’s defense shut down Ohio aside from an 80-yard drive in the second quarter to complete a perfect non-conference schedule.

Army 27, Baylor 20, OT

Waco, Texas – Tony Moore converted a crucial fourth down in overtime and later scored on a four-yard run to give the Black Knights (2-2) the victory.

Baylor (1-3) failed to get a first down on its OT possession. The game ended on Shawn Bell’s incomplete pass on fourth-and-six from the 21.

Texas Tech 62, SE Louisiana 0

Lubbock, Texas – Graham Harrell threw for 245 yards and four touchdowns – all in the first half – as the Red Raiders rolled.

Tech (3-1) scored on six of its first seven possessions, and the game was out of reach.

Texas A&M 45, Louisiana Tech 14

College Station, Texas – Stephen McGee threw three touchdown passes, and Jorvorskie Lane ran for two scores to lead the Aggies (4-0) in a game that started two hours late because of lightning.

Houston 34, Oklahoma State 25

Houston – Kevin Kolb outdueled Bobby Reid by throwing for 313 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Cougars (4-0) past the Cowboys (3-1).
