KU closes in on tourney

KU players celebrate a run scored by Matt Baty (9) during the sixth inning of the Jayhawks' victory over Oklahoma State in Big 12 Tournament play on Friday in Oklahoma City.

? At this rate, Kansas may not need to wait for an NCAA selection committee invitation to the national tournament.

The Jayhawks might just bully their way in.

KU will play Missouri tonight for a berth in the Big 12 title game, after beating No. 12-ranked Oklahoma State 11-6 Friday to improve to 2-0 in pool play.

Third baseman Erik Morrison hit two home runs, part of a 14-hit attack by the Jayhawks, who won again as a virtual road team before 5,594 at AT&T Bricktown Ballpark.

The Big 12 champion earns the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Friday’s win was KU’s second over a highly ranked, high-RPI team at this tournament, following a 7-2 victory against No. 13 Oklahoma Wednesday.

And it pushed the Jayhawks to the 40-win mark – a figure that usually carries clout with the committee.

So, are they in?

“I think without question,” Price said. “We came out and beat two teams that are ranked in the top 15 in the country RPI wise. Now we’re 15-14 in the conference, and we’ve got 40 wins.

“We’ve talked about how we’ve played one of the best schedules in the country. We’ve been about as competitive as we can be the last two games.”

Kansas, improving to 2-0 in pool play, now moves into an 8 p.m. showdown with 2-0 Missouri for the right to take on the Texas-Nebraska winner for the conference title.

“We talked about this the first time we came here four years ago, and we weren’t even capable of competing with the teams that were here,” Price said.

Roughing up Cowboys starter Matt Gardner, the Jayhawks built a 5-0 lead, getting started with Morrison’s first home run in the second to go up 1-0.

KU added two more runs in the third, then two in the fourth on a solo homer by Matt Baty and a run-scoring double by Gus Milner.

OSU finally got going with a five-run sixth, set off by a three-run homer by Shelby Ford into the bullpen in left-center, the deepest part of the park, some 415 feet away. Three more hits scored two more runs to pull the Cowboys even at 5-5.

But the Jayhawks responded with five runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, when they sent 10 batters to the plate.

After OSU got a run back in the eighth, Morrison drilled his second homer in the bottom of the inning.

Gardner, who had won his last four starts, lasted just 3 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and four walks in his shortest start of the season. Gardner had beaten KU back on April 14.

“We faced them in Stillwater a few weeks ago and saw what he was trying to do with us, and he got us really good,” Morrison said. “We took a different approach and basically let him come after us, and then hit his mistakes.”

Jayhawks starter Sean Land lasted five innings, allowing three runs, but didn’t factor in the decision. KU reliever Paul Smyth earned the win to improve to 5-1, while Don Czyz, the NCAA saves leader, secured the final five outs.
