Party on, but Arthur’s decision still off-limits

Friends and family of prized basketball recruit Darrell Arthur gathered Saturday afternoon at the Arthur home to throw a celebratory barbecue.

What specifically they were celebrating, though, is trying to stay a secret until Monday. Heck, the party-goers may not even have known.

Choosing between Kansas University, Baylor or LSU, Arthur will make his college decision public at 12:30 p.m. Monday from the Moorland Family YMCA in south Dallas.

But Arthur’s mother, Sandra, told the Journal-World on Saturday evening that she was not even sure if Darrell was 100-percent certain.

“Not quite,” she said. “He said he’s going to tell me tonight. He’s been real secretive about it.”

It’s also believed the coaching staffs recruiting Arthur don’t even know his decision.

Whatever that choice is, though, it will end a drawn-out recruiting process that has seen schools come and go from his top-three list for months. KU always has remained one of his favorites, but whether that’s his final choice still is a mystery.

Arthur, a McDonald’s All-American out of South Oak Cliff High in Dallas, is the highest-profile high school recruit still undecided. A 6-foot-9 forward, he led South Oak Cliff to the state title last season while averaging 28 points and 14 rebounds per game as a senior.

In a slow period for news across college athletics, Arthur’s recruitment has taken on a life of its own. Texas, Arizona and Indiana have all been serious contenders in the Arthur sweepstakes, but it appears to be narrowed to three. Two more are expected to be chopped off Monday.

“All I know is, it’s one of three schools,” Sandra Arthur said. “LSU, Kansas or Baylor.”
