Jayhawks preparing for home opener

It’s still winter, technically. But Lawrence’s unseasonably warm start to March is about to get even more spring-like thanks to the crackling of aluminum bats.

Kansas University’s baseball squad, off to a 10-4 start, will play host this weekend to a home-opening three-game series with Western Illinois at Hoglund Ballpark, starting with a 3 p.m. game today.

Jayhawk coach Ritch Price – and KU baseball fans – have to hope this sunny streak continues. KU has won four straight games, including all three it played at last weekend’s Music City Challenge in Nashville, Tenn.

Junior left-hander Sean Land will start today for the Jayhawks. Land (3-1, 3.28 earned-run average), who has two lifetime appearances against the Leathernecks, will face WIU senior lefty Bobby Mahon (1-1, 4.85).

Senior righty Ricky Fairchild (3-1, 5.40) is the scheduled Saturday starter for KU, and senior righty Kodiak Quick (2-1, 2.10) is penciled for Sunday.

The Leathernecks (2-6) have lost six straight games. Kansas is 9-0 all-time against Western Illinois.

Kansas will play host Wednesday to Baker University before traveling for a three-game series next weekend at top-ranked Clemson.
