Sabath takes over at Fort Hays State

Rick Sabath’s tenure as a member of the Kansas University baseball coaching staff can be summed up in two words: productive and short.

After helping lead the Jayhawks to their first NCAA regional appearance in 12 years, Sabath relinquished his duties Friday as KU’s recruiting coordinator to take over as the new head coach at Fort Hays State University.

Sabath is a 1994 graduate of Fort Hays State.

“I’m extremely happy for coach Sabath and his family,” said Kansas head coach Ritch Price. “It’s an opportunity to lead his alma mater. I know his goal is to win a national championship, and I believe he is talented enough to make that dream a reality.”

Prior to joining the KU staff, Sabath was head coach at Garden City Community College from 2002 to 05. In his three seasons, he compiled an overall record of 107-67. He was also the head coach at Cloud County Community College from 2000-02.

Sabath began his coaching career as a graduate assistant coach at KU. During his first stint with the Jayhawks, Sabath coached the catchers and served as the first-base coach in 1995 under Dave Bingham and 1996 under Bobby Randall.
