KU grid recruits present

Kansas University’s public student directory lists all but one of KU’s 25 incoming scholarship football recruits for the 2006 season.

The lone player missing is Belle Glade, Fla., linebacker Jeremy Terry, a highly touted prospect out of Glades Central High who chose KU late in the recruiting process.

Three of the 25 newcomers – junior-college transfers Rameses Arceo, Mike McCoy and Blake Bueltel – arrived in January and participated in spring drills. All three now are listed on the post-spring two-deep, with Bueltel penciled in as a starting cornerback.

The 21 others who arrived in time for summer classes include a fourth juco signee, Marc Jones, a tight end out of Norfolk, Va., who attended Kilgore College in Texas. Jones was supposed to arrive in January, but academics delayed his KU enrollment until June.

Summer classes and summer conditioning started this week and will last through July.

¢ Not another Bo: It doesn’t appear KU will have a two-sport athlete in Donte Bean.

A standout in baseball and football at North Garland High in Texas, Bean told Rivals.com during his recruiting process that he’d be interested in playing both sports in college. He ended up signing with Kansas to play football.

KU baseball coach Ritch Price, though, said Bean had not contacted him about the possibility of playing baseball and said he probably would have by this point if he were interested.

Former football standout Charles Gordon flirted with the idea of playing baseball while at KU and kept in close contact with Price during his decision-making. He ended up not playing.

Other former football standouts, including Harrison Hill and Isaac Byrd, had brief stints with KU’s baseball team.

Bean had professional interest for his baseball talents, mainly due to his speed and range as an outfielder. But he was not selected in this week’s amateur draft.

¢ Another honor: Rivals.com released its preseason list of the nation’s top 100 recruits for the class of 2007 this week. Among those listed was Free State High tight end Christian Ballard, a Kansas commitment.

Ballard is ranked as the 96th-best college prospect in the nation and the fourth-best tight-end prospect nationally. He currently has about a dozen offers from major-college programs, including Georgia, UCLA, Iowa and Oklahoma.

The top recruit in the nation is California quarterback Jimmy Clausen, a Notre Dame commitment being compared to John Elway.

¢ Allen signs: Former KU defensive tackle Tim Allen signed to play with the Omaha Beef of the United Indoor Football Assn.

Allen started the last two years at KU, playing on one of KU’s finest defenses in school history last season. He recorded 27 tackles and a forced fumble in 2005.

¢ Camp week: KU is in the midst of conducting a variety of camps, including a satellite camp Wednesday in Wichita.

Kansas coaches will hold overnight skills camps all next week, including a three-day camp for high-school-aged players starting Sunday. A “Super Jayhawk” day camp for high school seniors will wrap up camp season on June 17.
