Annie Giangrosso birdied the final two holes for a final-round 69 Thursday to win the Kansas Women’s Golf Association Amateur Championship, played over three days at Independence Country Club.
A junior at Kansas University, Giangrosso was trailing Kansas State junior Hailey Mireles by a stroke heading into the final round of play. Mireles shot a 75 Thursday to finish with a three-day total of 221, five shots behind Giangrosso.
“Both Annie and Hailey drove the ball very well,” said Mickey Carpenter, club pro at Independence Country Club. “Annie was very solid, very accurate with her distances, hit a lot of greens.”
Carpenter watched the two top finishers play the 18th hole, a 431-yard par 5.
“They both went for the green in two,” Carpenter said. “Annie had a 20-foot putt for eagle. She lagged it up there and tapped in for a birdie. Hailey’s ball ended up in the water, and she two-putted for a bogey.”
Giangrosso and Mireles both shot a 74 in Tuesday’s opening round, and Mireles shot a 72 on Wednesday, when Giangrosso shot a 73.
Lawrence High graduate Sydney Wilson, an incoming KU freshman, shot a 78-80-87 to finish tied for 16th. Wilson’s final round unraveled on No. 8, the second-to-last hole of her tournament. After her tee shot, Wilson said, she knocked three consecutive balls out of bounds and carded an 11 on the hole.
