Micah Downs has decided to transfer to Gonzaga University.
Downs, a 6-foot-8 former Kansas University freshman swingman from Kirkland, Wash., who left Lawrence on Monday night, confirmed Friday night he was going through the admissions process at Gonzaga, located in Spokane, Wash.
Downs told the Spokane Spokesman Review he would have no comment until after he officially had enrolled and settled in Spokane.
The Gonzaga registrar’s office confirmed to the Spokane paper that Downs had not yet enrolled, but the paperwork process had begun.
KU coach Bill Self was asked about the situation Friday night after the team charter plane landed in Des Moines, Iowa.
“I’ve got no comment,” Self said. “I will not talk about it until Tuesday, until after we play the next two games, Iowa State and Texas Tech.”
Self has said Downs has responsibilities he has to take care of before receiving a release from KU.
Had Gonzaga asked permission to speak to Downs?
“I have no idea,” Self said. “Not to my knowledge.”
Downs averaged 11.7 minutes in 13 games this season, scoring 4.3 points per game. He played 18 minutes in the last seven games before departing Lawrence.
