Quick release key for Case

There’s no indecision when Jeremy Case touches the basketball on the offensive end of the court.

“On the break, I am always looking for a place to spot-up. I always get my feet ready to shoot,” said Case, Kansas University’s sophomore guard from McAlester, Okla., whose long-range marksmanship has provided a spark the last two games.

Case hit three of four three-pointers of an 85-62 victory over Northern Colorado and four of six threes in a 73-56 victory over New Orleans.

He realizes the quicker he releases, the better. If he’s guarded, he’ll pass, but if open, he’ll fire away – and do so quickly.

“I’m not 6-foot-5. I can’t shoot it slow. I’ve got to be able to get it off and not get it blocked,” said Case, who is listed at 6-1, 170 pounds. “I’ve got to come in and make something positive happen. It’s what I’m supposed to do. When I get in, I have to make best of it.”

KU coach Bill Self, who rewarded Case with 11 minutes on Dec. 22 against UNC and 17 against New Orleans on Thursday, says Case has been playing well since he has recovered from a torn tendon on the bottom of his left foot that slowed him a few weeks ago.

“If he can become a guy that can defend pretty well and be our second handler and handle pressure pretty well, he can play,” Self said. “Jeremy will, no matter how much he plays, average the most points per minute.

“He will not be as effective playing 25 minutes as he would less than 25 because physically he needs to play all-out in order to do some things defensively. The guy can score points in bunches.”

Case, who red-shirted a year ago as he battled a groin pull, said his confidence never had been higher.

“I feel I can hit every shot,” he said, adding, “I expect to have a role. If I keep working hard, things will go well. I like to put my faith in, the best players will play. Whoever is playing best will be out there. Like always, I had to stay ready. Whenever my name is called, I’ll play the best of my ability.”

¢ Lee signs with ‘Trotters: Former Kansas University guard Michael Lee has signed a contract with the Harlem Globetrotters and, according to team officials, will join the team’s current “Unstoppable” tour that began Dec. 26.

The Trotters will play at Kansas City’s Kemper Arena at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.

The Globetrotters also have signed forward Jefferson Sobral, a five-year member of the Brazil National Team and former Tennessee guard Scooter McFadgon.

“Each of these newcomers are athletic and bring a big upside to the organization,” said Mannie Jackson, chairman and CEO of the Globetrotters. “Our basketball staff believes they all have the potential to develop into solid Globetrotters, both on and off the court.”
