Phoenix ? Tenth-ranked Arizona State beat Texas Tech, 61-45, on Monday night when the second outdoor game in women’s college basketball history was called because of rain with 4:18 to play at Chase Field, home of baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks.
There wasn’t time to close the roof before the court got dangerously wet, and the game was called because of concern that players would be injured.
The temperature was a brisk 56 degrees at tipoff under partly cloudy skies in downtown Phoenix, and most of the crowd of 7,791 in the 49,000-seat stadium was bundled up like Packers fans at Lambeau Field.
In the second half, when Arizona State (10-1) led by as many as 20 points, a slight wind made it even colder, then the raindrops came.
Danielle Orsillo led the Sun Devils with 16 points on 7-for-8 shooting. Erin Myrick was the only Texas Tech player in double figures with 11 points.
Texas A&M 70, North Texas 52
College Station, Texas – Danielle Gant had 14 points and 11 rebounds, and Texas A&M overcame poor shooting for a victory over North Texas.
The Aggies (7-2) shot 27 percent in the first half, but carried a 29-23 lead into halftime. They improved to 50 percent shooting in the second half and pushed their lead to 27 points with 4:41 remaining.
Takia Starks scored 20 points to lead four Aggies in double figures.
Patrice Reado scored 12, and La Toya Micheaux had 10. Micheaux also had nine rebounds.
Sanetra Jackson led North Texas (3-7) with 24 points, including 6-of-6 free-throw shooting. Amber Jackson scored 10. The Mean Green shot 41 percent from the field.
Micheaux contributed five steals for Texas A&M, which scored 36 points off turnovers to only 15 for North Texas.
