KU’s Bacchus, Battle shine

The wind was – but wasn’t – a factor on the final day of the Kansas Relays.

For those performing inside Memorial Stadium – as Kansas University’s Charisse Bacchus was – the wind was a foe.

“They had us jumping into a headwind, which is ridiculous,” Bacchus said about her participation in the long jump. “But it was a pretty good jump, except for we were jumping into that headwind.”

Bacchus placed second with a jump of 20-feet, 1â2-inch – 83â4 inches shy of winner Lela Nelson.

Now, outside of the stadium, where Sheldon Battle was, the wind was nonexistent.

“In the discus, outside, there was pretty much no wind, so it was kind of a bummer in that way,” said Battle, who won with a throw of 179-2 – 7-feet, 4-inches farther than KU teammate and runner-up Cody Roberts. “But we didn’t expect wind out here because we don’t get very much in our throwing facilities, so it didn’t really play that much of a role.”

In the GOLDZONE 2 shot put, Battle finished third at 63-101â2, a good 6-feet, 51â4-inches short of first place.

“It was an OK day, place-wise, but I was a little disappointed with my distances,” Battle said. “But I guess it’s a stepping stone, and I just look forward from here.”

Bacchus ran the first leg of the winning 400-meter college relay team in GOLDZONE 2.

“All the ladies on our team are very hard workers, and we just get together and do what we need to do – brought the gold home,” Bacchus said.
