KU tennis goes 5-1 at invitational

? Kansas University’s tennis team went 5-1 during Sunday’s final day of the Hurricane Invitational to compile a combined record of 21-7 in the tournament

“We are very pleased with our play in the tournament,” KU coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “Our girls are all worn out, but they couldn’t be happier about this weekend.”

Brittany Brown, Elizaveta Avdeeva, Ksenia Bukina, Lauren Hommell and Stephanie Smith notched victories against in-state rival Wichita State.

? Kansas University’s women’s tennis team suffered just one setback in the singles main draw of the ITA Central Regional Tournament on Thursday.

KU’s Cheryl Mallaiah, Paige Brown and Emily Haylock each won first-round matches. Mallaiah, the tournament’s 14th seed, beat Kansas State’s Kathy Chuda, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.

Brown, a freshman who reached the main draw by playing her way through the qualifier, hammered Utah State’s Sara Lowe, 6-2, 6-1.

And Haylock beat 13th-seeded Tjasa Suvak, of New Mexico, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Kansas’ Courtney Steinbock fell to sixth-seeded Katrina Balan of Nebraska, 6-3, 6-1.

Steinbock and sister Kristen, seeded No. 2 in the doubles draw, received a first-round doubles bye.

Haylock and Kim Lorenz beat a doubles team from Northern Arizona, 8-1.
