Burlington popular destination for recruiters

Some big-time college basketball coaches will be heading to the small town of Burlington on recruiting trips this year and next.

Tyrel Reed, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior guard from Burlington High, who happens to be one of the best players in the recruiting Class of 2007, is being recruited by Kansas University, North Carolina, Iowa, Illinois, Gonzaga, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Wichita State and Ball State, among others.

Coaches from UNLV and Stanford were in town to watch Reed in an open-gym workout earlier this week. KU coaches are expected in town today as the evaluation period continues.

“There is a chance that Tyrel might take an unofficial visit to Kansas during Late Night, but I really do not believe that he has made a decision yet,” Tyrel’s dad and prep coach, Stacy, told rivals.com.

¢ Lewis unsettled: Former KU basketball recruit Dwight Lewis, who was forced to leave the New Orleans suburb of Metairie, La., because of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, is looking for a high school to attend.

Lewis’ dad, Dwight Sr., told rivals.com Thursday that his son likely would attend a private school in or near Katy, Texas, for his senior campaign.

Lewis, a 6-5 guard, had started classes at Katy High, but apparently won’t be allowed to play hoops there.

“It sounds like several people from around the school district don’t like the idea of Dwight being at Katy High School. I get the feeling some people are more worried about wins and losses. It’s not the high school’s fault,” Dwight Sr. told rivals.com.

Lewis, who attended Archbishop Rummel High until the hurricane uprooted his family, is making an official visit to Southern California this weekend and also is considering Miami of Florida and Oklahoma.

Lewis orally committed to KU in April, but decommitted on Aug. 8. He is no longer a KU recruit.
