? The No. 28 Kansas University men’s cross country team outperformed a number of teams currently slotted ahead of it in the national rankings, finishing fourth Saturday at the NCAA Pre-Nationals.

The Jayhawks came in ahead of No. 11 Cal Poly, No. 17 Florida State, No. 18 Ohio State, No. 21 Indiana, No. 22 Dartmouth and No. 23 North Carolina State at the meet, which serves as a preview for the NCAA Championships to be held on the same course Nov. 21.

No. 5 Stanford won the meet.

KU was led by junior Benson Chesang, who finished 14th in 24 minutes, 5.2 seconds. Sophomore Paul Hefferon finished 29th in 24:18.1.

“I thought it was a good performance,” KU coach Stanley Redwine said. “It was definitely a total team effort, and we’re pretty excited.”

The KU women also finished fourth, with Michigan winning the team title. Sophomore Lisa Morrisey led the Jayhawks, taking 11th in 22:26.

Next up for both squads is the Big 12 Championships, set for Oct. 28 at Waco, Texas.
